- Silane monomers, in the form of organofunctional alkoxysilanes, have wide utility in coatings as adhesion promoters, pigment treatments, and crosslinking agents. Inorganic alkoxy functionality, coupled with a wide range of organofunctional groups, allows for covalent bonding between organic polymers and mineral surfaces (for example: pigments, fillers, and glass and metal substrates). Alkoxysilane monomers (which are not, per se, silicones) are reasonably strong polar solvents and completely miscible with many organics.
- The use of Silanes coatings has provided improvements in: Abrasion resistance, Adhesion, Flow behavior, Pigment and filler dispersion, UV resistance, Water and chemical resistance.
- Adhesion Promoters for Coatings: Synthetic elastomeric and resinous coatings on hydrophilic siliceous and metallic surfaces are commonly subject to adhesion problems, especially after moisture exposure, water immersion or salt spray. Protection by a coating depends on its adherence to the substrate surface. Silane coupling agents help assure good coating performance, either as an additive to the coating or in a separate primer.
